Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. Queen Latifah's performance in television and music has been recognized with a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced after Latifah turned ten. Latifah grew up within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah was the stage name she used at the time she reached the age of eight. The word means extremely sensitive in Arabic. Always tall, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a power forward for the basketball team at her high school. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah began to beatbox with the fresh rap ladies. Latifah is one of the founding members of the Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective made up of DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created an audition for the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah during that time and was awed by the song. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
